Part of a nationwide celebration of National Preservation Month

Masterson Pioneer Heirloom Kitchen Garden

In 1851 the Masterson family traveled by covered wagon from Missouri to homestead the land that is now called Dorris Ranch. One of their first jobs was to build a log cabin and plant a kitchen garden. Come help us break ground for our pioneer heirloom kitchen garden. Learn about some of the first crops grown in the Willamette Valley.

Because creating a sustainable life in a frontier outpost was a difficult and demanding task, little time, energy, or space was available for growing merely decorative flowers. Herbs, however, were important, since the household could use blossoms, stems, and roots for promotion of health and healing, for cooking, and for fragrance.

Throughout May, the National Trust and its thousands of partners across the country demonstrate the importance of our nation’s heritage as they focus on many aspects of the preservation movement including historic travel, heritage education, historic homeownership, and community revitalization. The National Trust strongly encourages people to participate in National Preservation Month events being held in their communities.

A classic hayride FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

There’s nothing else around like this unique event. Take a hayride through the Dorris Ranch orchards, which will be haunted by dancing ghosts, scarecrows, and maybe even a few aliens. Warm up after the spooky ride with some hot apple cider in the Dorris Ranch Barn. Visit the Barn Loft, where Dr. Frank’s lab is brewing up trouble; then have fun with crafts and games. This family-friendly event is fun and not too scary for even the smallest ghosts and goblins.

Register at the Community Recreation Center, 250 S. 32nd Street, Springfield, or call 736-4544.
